The 3 Band Tuxedo Damsel (also called the Tuxedo Damselfish or Threeband Damselfish) is a compact Pomacentrid with a clean black-and-white pattern and three bold vertical bands. It’s commonly associated with Fiji and is a popular choice when you want a small, high-contrast fish that stays active around the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picks a favorite crevice or small cave and “checks in” there between short laps around the tank
- Quick, direct feeding response—often one of the first fish out when food hits the water
- Regular darting and hovering near the rockscape, especially along edges and overhangs
- More confident, out-in-front behavior after it learns the tank’s routine over the first week or two
Provide plenty of live rock with multiple hiding spots so it can establish a home base without owning the whole aquascape. Offer a mixed menu of meaty frozen foods plus quality flakes/pellets, and include some dried seaweed or algae-based options in the rotation. In community setups, it does best when your layout has clear “zones” separated by rock and coral structure.
Will a 3 Band Tuxedo Damsel stay in one area or use the whole tank?
Most settle into a favorite rock crevice and patrol a small loop around it, especially during peak daylight hours.
Can I keep more than one 3 Band Tuxedo Damsel together?
It’s possible in larger, well-structured rockwork where each fish can claim its own nook; adding them at the same time tends to go smoother than adding one later.
Does rearranging rockwork help when adding one to an established tank?
A small re-scape (moving a few key rocks to break sightlines) often helps existing fish re-map territories more evenly.
What foods do they usually take first during acclimation?
They commonly start with frozen brine or mysis and transition well to flakes/pellets once they recognize the feeding schedule.
What’s a practical way to remove one later without tearing down the aquascape?
A clear fish trap baited at feeding time usually works best once the fish gets comfortable entering it for food.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
