The Brunneus Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus brunneus), also called the Dusky Fairy Wrasse, is a deepwater Cirrhilabrus with a dusky bronze-to-near-black body, subtle blue highlights in the fins, and a yellow underside. It’s a reef safe wrasse that adds constant, midwater motion and quick “looping” swims around the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruises the open water column, then threads through arches and swim-throughs
- Brief “flashing” color changes during excitement, feeding time, or social moments
- A consistent routine of patrolling the same areas of the tank throughout the day
- More visible behavior once it learns your feeding schedule and tank traffic patterns
Provide a mature reef with plenty of live rock for shelter plus open swimming room. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other frozen blends) in a few smaller feedings each day so it can graze naturally between laps. A tight-fitting lid helps keep this active swimmer secure and settled in your aquarium.
Can this wrasse be hard to spot for the first few days?
It’s common for fairy wrasses to spend extra time deep in the rockwork at first, then become more consistently visible as they learn the tank’s rhythm.
Does a Brunneus Fairy Wrasse sleep in the sand like some wrasses?
Fairy wrasses typically rest in the rockwork rather than burying; they pick a crevice or ledge and settle in for the night.
Can I keep two Brunneus Fairy Wrasses together long-term?
In larger aquariums it can work, especially if they’re introduced thoughtfully and given space; many hobbyists use an acclimation box to smooth out early social “sorting.”
How can I tell male vs. female (or transitioning) in this species?
Males are usually darker with more dramatic contrast, while females/juveniles tend to look more brown-to-orange; coloration and pattern intensity often change as a fish matures or transitions.
What’s the easiest way to get one eating confidently?
Many keepers start with frozen meaty foods in smaller portions multiple times daily, then gradually mix in pellets once it recognizes them as food.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
