The Canary Blenny: Yellow (Meiacanthus oualanensis), also sold as the Canary Fang Blenny or Yellow Forktail Blenny, is a solid-yellow blenny that often spends time hovering in the open water column. It uses live rock as a home base for quick dashes, perching, and snapping at tiny foods drifting by.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, confident swims from rock to rock with frequent midwater hovering
- Quick “snap and retreat” feeding—grabs food, then returns to a favorite perch
- Regular inspection passes along the glass and rock surfaces between meals
- More front-glass interaction once it learns your feeding routine
- Stronger daytime activity after it settles in, often within the first couple of weeks
Provide plenty of live rock with small ledges and crevices so it can choose perches and retreat points. Offer a mixed menu of small meaty frozen foods plus a quality prepared food it can take in small bites, fed at least twice daily for steady body weight. Plan for a single specimen unless you are intentionally adding a bonded pair in a larger, established reef.
Why does my Canary Blenny hover midwater more than other blennies?
This group tends to “free-swim” more than many bottom-perching blennies, so midwater hovering can be a normal day-to-day behavior, especially once it feels established.
My Canary Blenny bends into a “C-shape” or does odd hovering poses—what does that mean?
Keepers often notice unusual hovering and curved body postures during settling and between short swims. If it’s still swimming normally, holding color, and engaging at feeding time, it’s usually just part of its typical behavior.
It’s in my tank but I rarely see it eat—how do I get it started on prepared foods?
Start with small, easy-to-catch foods (like mysis-sized items) delivered in smaller portions more than once per day, ideally near its favorite perch. Once it’s rushing out reliably, mixing in tiny pellets or a finely-sized prepared food often works well.
Can I keep more than one fang blenny (or mix it with similar-looking blennies)?
Many hobbyists have the best consistency by keeping a single Meiacanthus per tank unless adding a known pair. If mixing, adding plenty of rockwork “breaks” and introducing fish with different shapes/roles helps keep day-to-day interactions calm.
Do Canary Blennies nip fingers during tank maintenance?
Most ignore hands, but some may investigate fast movement near their perch. Using long tools for close-in work near its favorite rock and moving steadily (not suddenly) usually keeps interactions uneventful.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
