The Diamond Goby is a sand-sifting goby that takes mouthfuls of substrate, filters out edible particles, and releases clean sand back into the tank to help keep the sandbed turned over. It’s typically white to pale with orange spotting, and is often listed as a Diamond Watchman Goby or Orange Spotted Sleeper Goby.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady “sift and spit” feeding passes across open sand areas
- A shallow burrow or sleeping spot formed under rock edges
- Sand piles and small “renovations” that change the look of the substrate day to day
- Perching on the sand near its chosen area between foraging laps
Provide a fine sandbed and stable rockwork so it can sift and burrow without shifting your aquascape. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis or enriched brine) in multiple small feedings, and keep the sandbed productive so it has natural forage between meals. In larger systems, a bonded pair can work well when given enough open sand to share.
Is it normal for a Diamond Goby to create big sand mounds?
Yes—many will move sand to build up a “doorway” or mound near their sleeping area, and it can shift from day to day.
Why is my Diamond Goby not sand-sifting yet?
Some start right away, while others take a couple of days to settle in and choose a routine in a new tank.
Will it cover corals or frags with sand?
It can kick or pile sand while sifting; placing sandbed corals on stable rock or a raised spot usually keeps maintenance simple.
Do Diamond Gobies eat prepared foods, or only what’s in the sand?
Most learn to take frozen and pellet foods after acclimation, especially when food is offered close to the sandbed.
Will it pair with a pistol shrimp like a watchman goby?
It may share space with other bottom dwellers, but it’s not an obligate pistol-shrimp partner in the way many Cryptocentrus watchman gobies are.
