The Golden Domino Damsel (Dascyllus auripinnis) is a reef-associated domino damselfish from the Central Pacific, known for its dark base color contrasted by warm golden to orange tones in the fins. In an aquarium, it typically chooses a favorite section of rockwork and becomes a constant, visible part of the tank’s daily activity.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols a small home area and repeatedly returns to the same caves and ledges
- Spends most of the day out in the open, hovering and making short, fast dashes
- Rushes to the front for feeding and eats confidently in higher-flow areas
- Interacts closely with rockwork and may “nest” against a preferred surface
How to Succeed: Provide stable rockwork with a few tight crevices it can claim, plus open water for short bursts of swimming. Offer a mixed diet (meaty foods plus quality pellets/flakes) in small portions once or twice daily. In community setups, it does best with tankmates that stay composed around assertive, fast feeding behavior.
Do Golden Domino Damsels “pick a spot” and stay there?
Many settle into one part of the aquascape and treat it like a base, returning to the same ledges and caves throughout the day.
Will it host an anemone like a clownfish?
Some domino-type damsels will associate with anemones or coral-like structures, but it’s not a requirement for normal behavior in captivity.
Why does the behavior look different as it grows?
As they mature, many individuals become more focused on defending their chosen area, especially around feeding time and maintenance.
Can I keep two together if they’re added at the same time?
Pairs are sometimes kept successfully in larger, structured rockwork layouts, but most keepers plan around one established individual per display zone.
What’s a “normal” response to hands/tools in the tank?
It’s common for this species to investigate and stay close during maintenance, especially if it has a well-established home area.
