The Solar Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus aquamarinus) is a reef-safe fairy wrasse known in the hobby for shifting blue-green body tones with a warmer yellow head region under different angles of light. It stays active in the water column and brings constant motion to established reef and fish-only systems.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick, controlled cruising through open water with frequent passes through rockwork
- Color “flashes” during social moments, especially when it notices other wrasses nearby
- Regular laps along the front glass at feeding time, then back to midwater patrols
- A consistent “home zone” it returns to throughout the day, especially as lights dim
Provide an aquascape with caves and swim lanes so it can move between cover and open water smoothly. Offer a mix of frozen meaty foods plus quality pellets in small portions, and you’ll typically see the best daytime activity and coloration.
Will it stay hidden the first few days in a new tank?
Many settle in by claiming one rockwork zone first, then spend longer periods in the open as they learn the tank’s feeding routine.
Why does it sometimes look dull, then suddenly turn bright again?
Fairy wrasses shift intensity with mood, lighting, and social cues; brighter “on” colors often show during interaction or evening ramp-down.
Can one kept alone still develop male coloration over time?
In many Cirrhilabrus wrasses, social structure influences coloration, and a lone individual may show more male-typical traits as it matures.
What does “flashing” behavior look like, and what triggers it?
It’s a quick display with intensified color and fin posture, commonly triggered by seeing other wrasses, reflections, or a change in lighting.
Where does it sleep at night?
Most choose a rock crevice or sheltered nook and return to it consistently once they’ve settled into the tank.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
