The Tailspot Blenny is a compact algae grazer that spends its day picking at rock surfaces and film growth, making it a natural fit for nano reef and reef tank setups. It has a coppery-to-orange body with a distinct dark spot at the base of the tail, and it’s most often seen perched on ledges or peeking from small crevices.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock shelves, then darting short distances between favorite spots
- Frequent “grazing laps” where it pecks at rock and glass surfaces
- A consistent home base (sleeping hole) it returns to each evening
- More bold, open perching behavior as it settles in over the first week or two
To succeed with this blenny, provide plenty of live rock with multiple small holes and ledges so it can choose a secure perch. Keep some natural algae available and supplement with algae-based foods so it continues grazing throughout the day. If you keep other blennies, arranging multiple perch zones helps each fish claim its own space.
Why is my Tailspot Blenny hiding in one hole most of the time?
It’s normal for them to adopt a “home base” and use it as a resting and sleeping spot, with short grazing trips out into the open.
Does it ever change color or look blotchy when the lights are off?
Many individuals lighten or darken to blend in with their surroundings, so a different night-time pattern can be normal.
Can a Tailspot Blenny disappear for a day or two and then show back up?
Yes—some will stay deep in rockwork for stretches, especially after a disturbance, and then resume normal perching and grazing later.
Will it bother snails or other clean-up crew near its perch?
They may “shoo” animals away from their chosen hole, but it’s typically limited to quick posturing around that immediate spot.
How do I get it to take prepared foods consistently?
Offer very small portions near its favorite perch (same spot, same time), and mix algae-based pellets or flakes with frozen foods until it recognizes the routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
