The Foxface One Spot (Blotched Foxface / rabbitfish) is a steady algae grazer that spends the day picking at film algae and growth on rockwork. Adults are bright yellow with a bold black-and-white “foxface” mask and a single dark eyespot on the rear upper body.
What You’ll Observe:
- Methodical grazing laps along the rockwork, with frequent short pauses to pick at patches it finds
- A quick shift into a darker, mottled “camo” pattern during rest or when startled, then back to normal color later
- A routine of claiming a favorite cave or ledge to wedge into at night
- Increasing “front glass” behavior over the first few weeks as it learns your feeding schedule
To succeed, provide plenty of live rock for grazing plus open swimming room, and offer algae sheets and veggie-rich foods regularly so it stays focused on natural grazing. Most tanks do best when you use a feeding clip and place seaweed in a consistent spot. When moving this fish, guiding it into a rigid specimen container (instead of a net) helps keep handling smooth.
Why did my Foxface turn mottled brown/black and white?
Many keepers report this as a normal camo/resting coloration that shows up during stress or sleep and fades as it relaxes.
How long does it take a new Foxface to stop hiding?
It often settles in gradually; a consistent feeding routine and stable activity around the tank usually bring it out more over the first few weeks.
How do hobbyists reduce coral sampling once it starts?
The most common approach discussed is increasing vegetable-based feeding and keeping a predictable algae source available so grazing stays consistent.
What’s the easiest way to move it without getting spined?
Guiding it into a clear container underwater (or “cupping” with a container and lid) is commonly preferred over nets that can snag fin spines.
Will it still graze nuisance algae if it gets lots of nori?
Many do, but some focus on the clip; offering smaller portions more often and placing the clip away from the main rockwork can encourage more roaming and picking.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
