The Coral Beauty Angelfish (Centropyge bispinosa) is a dwarf angelfish that spends much of the day grazing on rockwork, helping manage light film algae while adding constant movement to your aquascape. Adults show a deep blue to purple body with orange to yellow flanks and a thin blue edge along the fins.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops through rock arches, caves, and ledges, with frequent stops to pick at the rock surface
- A consistent “grazing route” it repeats throughout the day as it explores the same zones
- Quick, confident feeding once it recognizes the tank’s routine (often meeting food in the water column)
- Occasional “posturing” displays toward fish with a similar shape, then returning to grazing
- A regular nighttime routine of settling into a favored crevice in the rockwork
How to succeed: Provide a mature aquarium with plenty of live rock so it can graze naturally and retreat between short swims. Offer a varied mix of angelfish foods, algae-based foods, and meaty items to match its natural omnivore behavior. In community tanks, it does best when it has its own rockwork lanes and is introduced with tankmates that don’t closely match its body shape.
Do Coral Beauties sometimes start sampling corals after “behaving” for months?
Some keepers report that a fish can ignore corals for a long stretch and later decide to test a specific colony. If it happens, it’s often focused on one or two corals rather than everything in the tank.
Is it normal for a Coral Beauty to pick at rock all day even when it’s well-fed?
Yes—constant picking is typical grazing behavior, not a sign that it’s “still hungry.” Many hobbyists see this as one of the main reasons the fish stays active and interesting.
Why does my Coral Beauty keep flaring at its reflection?
This is a common territorial response, especially on glass panels that catch strong lighting. The behavior often comes and goes as the fish settles into its daily route.
Will a Coral Beauty usually accept pellets and frozen foods long-term?
Most do well long-term when foods are rotated, especially mixes that include algae-based ingredients and angelfish-style blends. Variety tends to keep them engaged at feeding time.
If I ever need to move it, what’s the most reliable way to catch one in a rock-filled tank?
Many hobbyists have the best results using a fish trap during regular feeding, or by planning around the fish’s consistent daily route. Patience tends to work better than “chasing” with a net.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
