The Starry Blenny (also commonly sold as the Snowflake Blenny) is a rock-perching algae grazer that spends its day combing surfaces for microalgae. It has a mottled dark body with small white spotting and yellow accents in the fins, giving it a high-contrast “salt-and-pepper” look that stands out against live rock.
What You’ll Observe:
- Posting up on a favorite ledge, then “hopping” from rock to rock between grazing stops
- Short, repeated patrol loops over the same patches of rockwork as it works film algae
- A quick transition from grazing mode to joining the regular feeding routine once it learns the schedule
- Picking and combing behavior on textured surfaces, especially where light hits the rock most
To help your Starry Blenny do its job, provide plenty of established rockwork with natural grazing area, plus multiple perching spots and crevices. Offer extra plant-based foods (like spirulina-based and herbivore preparations) so it stays full even after it has cleared easy algae from the tank. In most aquariums it’s best kept as a single blenny unless you’re intentionally housing a bonded pair in a larger system.
Will my Starry Blenny actually eat hair algae, or will it ignore it?
Many keepers report they focus first on film algae and easier “slick” growth on rock and glass; hair algae results vary by tank and the specific algae type.
Why does it “yawn” or open its mouth wide on the rocks?
This is commonly seen during perching and grazing breaks, and it often looks like a big stretch rather than a feeding strike.
Is it normal for a Starry Blenny to wedge itself into a tight hole to rest?
Yes—many settle into a specific nook or crevice at night and return to the same spot repeatedly once they feel established.
Can two algae blennies be kept together if they’re added at the same time?
Some hobbyists have success in larger, rock-heavy tanks, but most aim for one “rockskipper-type” blenny per territory so each fish can settle into its own grazing route.
Why does it sometimes do a quick dash at other fish near “its” rock?
Short bursts like this are often just brief boundary-setting around a favored perch or grazing patch, and they usually decrease once everyone has consistent space and routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
