The Fiji Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera taupou), also called the South Seas Devil, is a deep-blue damselfish that picks a favorite ledge and stays active in the open reef. It tops out around 2.5–3 inches.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols a short route, then returns to the same rock crevice.
- Rushes to food quickly and feeds in the water column and near rock.
- Uses quick turns and fin flares during “face-off” displays.
Provide rockwork with several holes so it can choose a home base and move through the reef. Feed a varied omnivore mix (frozen and quality pellets/flakes) once or twice daily, and plan on one per tank unless you have a confirmed pair.
How do I catch it later?
Once it learns a crevice, it slips into rockwork when approached. Fish traps are recommended if you plan to catch them out of your tank.
Is it normal to guard one cave?
Yes—most of its activity stays centered on a small territory.
Can you tell male vs female?
Some keepers note bluer dorsal on males and more yellow on females.
Will it breed in captivity?
Pairs lay eggs on a surface and the male guards the clutch. The offspring are very small, and require live foods so captive rearing can be difficult.
Why is it called “devil”?
The name reflects strong, persistent territorial displays in aquariums.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
