The Splendid Pintail Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus isosceles) is a reef-safe fairy wrasse from Japan to the Philippines that’s commonly found around outer-reef rubble zones.
Its spade-shaped pintail and shifting pastel mix of yellow, orange, pink, and blue make it a standout in the water column, especially when males display.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruises the mid-water column and weaves in and out of rock outcrops throughout the day
- Makes quick, confident dashes into the open at feeding time to grab small meaty foods
- Brief “flashing” displays (fins up, colors deepening) during social moments in the tank
- Settles into the rockwork to rest at lights-out, often choosing the same general area each night
Provide open swimming room plus plenty of rockwork with shaded gaps it can retreat into between laps. Offer a varied menu of mysis, brine, other meaty frozen foods, and quality pellets in several small feedings per day to match its active routine. Maintain a tight-fitting lid or mesh top so it can explore the full tank comfortably.
Does this fairy wrasse need a sand bed to sleep?
Cirrhilabrus fairy wrasses typically sleep in rockwork and can form a mucus cocoon, so sand isn’t required for sleeping.
Can a smaller/initial-phase fish become a male over time?
Like many fairy wrasses, the dominant fish in a group can transition to male when no male is present.
Is it normal for a new fairy wrasse to “disappear” into the rocks at first?
Many keepers report new fairy wrasses spending extra time tucked into rockwork early on, then becoming more visible as they settle into the tank’s daily rhythm.
What’s the easiest way to add it to a tank that already has other wrasses?
Hobbyists often use a clear acclimation box for a few days so existing wrasses can see the newcomer without direct contact before release.
Why does it “flash” brighter colors at certain times?
Color intensity commonly increases during social displays, especially when interacting with other fish in the water column.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
