The Fiji Bicolor Foxface (Siganus uspi) is an algae-grazing rabbitfish that helps keep rockwork and hard surfaces clearer of film algae. It has a deep brown to near-black front half with a bright yellow rear section, giving it a sharp two-tone look in larger reef tanks. This species is native to Fiji’s coral reef zones.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising laps through open water with frequent stops to graze on rock and tank walls
- Repeated “patrol routes” it follows as it learns where algae grows best in your aquascape
- Strong interest in seaweed sheets and veggie-based foods at feeding time
- Confident daytime activity that keeps it visible in a display aquarium
Provide open swimming space and mature live rock so it can graze throughout the day. Offer nori and other algae-based foods alongside a varied frozen diet to keep it well conditioned and focused on grazing. Most keepers house it as a single rabbitfish, paired with other non-rabbitfish herbivores that share the tank well.
Does a foxface “change color” at night or when startled?
Many foxfaces shift into a darker, mottled pattern when resting or reacting to sudden changes; normal coloration usually returns once the fish settles.
Will it eat bubble algae every time?
Some individuals go after bubble algae quickly, while others focus more on film algae and softer growth; offering nori regularly can keep grazing behavior consistent.
What’s the easiest way to move one without getting poked?
Many hobbyists use a specimen container (or rigid cup) instead of a net, guiding the fish in calmly so the fins aren’t snagged during transfer.
Why did it suddenly start picking at one specific coral?
It’s often a “favorite snack” situation rather than broad coral-eating behavior; keeping feeding consistent and offering algae to graze can reduce curiosity picking.
Does it get along with tangs long-term?
In many mixed-reef setups it coexists well with tangs when there’s plenty of grazing area and swimming room, especially if both fish are introduced with clear personal space.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
