The Bella Sleeper Goby is a constant sand-sifting fish that helps turn over and aerate the substrate while it feeds. It’s known for warm maroon-to-red coloration and is most often associated with Japanese/Okinawa collection areas.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long stretches of steady sand-sifting across open areas
- A home base under rock ledges, with tunnels that change over time
- Mouthfuls of sand carried and “snowed” out through the gills
- Short “disappearing acts” after introduction, then regular daily routines
To do well long-term, provide open sand with nearby rockwork it can burrow under, and keep frags you care about slightly elevated off the bottom. Offer small meaty foods in a few smaller feedings so it can eat without rushing. A tight-fitting lid helps keep normal startle-jumps from becoming escapes.
Why did my Bella Sleeper Goby vanish right after I added it?
It often picks one secure burrow and stays out of sight while it maps the tank, then reappears on a routine.
Will a Bella Sleeper Goby pair with a pistol shrimp like a “watchman” goby?
This is a sand-sifting Valenciennea goby and typically does not form the watchman/pistol shrimp partnership.
Is it normal for them to jump or “test” the lid, especially at night?
Yes—many keepers report bursts of surface activity when settling in, so tight coverage matters.
Why is my water cloudy after it starts working the sand?
New sifting can suspend fine particles for a while; it usually clears as filtration catches up and the sandbed stabilizes.
Can I keep two Bella Sleeper Gobies together?
Some hobbyists keep pairs successfully, but pairing is individual—two can still sort out territory before they settle.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
