The Blue Streak Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cyanotaenia) is a shrimp goby with thin blue striping over a brown-gray body and faint vertical bars along the sides. In the wild it’s found over protected fine-sand areas in lagoons and bays, where it may share a burrow with an Alpheus pistol shrimp.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching at a burrow entrance and retreating in a single quick dart when startled
- Moving sand and small rubble to shape a low “porch” in front of its home
- Watching the water column from the bottom and tracking tank activity from one spot
- Becoming most visible around feeding time and learning where food enters the tank
- Occasionally sharing a burrow with a pistol shrimp and acting as the lookout nearby
Provide a fine sand bed and place rockwork securely so the goby can dig and settle under stable structure. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, enriched brine, and finely chopped seafood) in small portions multiple times per day for best consistency. A calm, low-traffic area near the base of the rock line helps it establish a reliable home base.
Do I need a pistol shrimp for this goby to do well?
No—many hobbyists keep it successfully without a shrimp, but a compatible pistol shrimp can add natural burrow behavior. Pairing can happen quickly or take weeks to months depending on where each animal settles.
Why did it “vanish” after I added it?
It commonly disappears while it picks a spot and builds a burrow system, then reappears on its own schedule. If there’s a pistol shrimp involved, you may hear occasional clicking even when you don’t see either animal.
Is it normal for a watchman goby to swim frantically near the top right after introduction?
Yes—keepers often describe a short “stress loop” or glass-surfing phase before the fish commits to a hideout. Once it chooses a burrow area (and especially once it links up with a shrimp), this usually stops.
Will it undermine my rockwork or corals while digging?
It tends to dig and redecorate right around its entrance, which can shift sand from under small frags or loose rocks. Most hobbyists get the best results when rockwork is set firmly and frags are placed where falling sand won’t bury them.
What if it won’t eat the first few days?
A short “settling in” period is common; try offering smaller pieces and delivering food close to its burrow entrance so it doesn’t have to compete in the open. Once it starts taking food reliably, it usually keeps a consistent feeding routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
