The Eclipse Butterfly (Chaetodon bennetti), also called the Bluelashed or Bennett’s Butterflyfish, has a solid yellow body with a distinct black “eclipse” patch outlined in blue and blue-lined markings on the face. It’s an Indo-Pacific reef-associated butterflyfish most often seen close to reef structure.
What You’ll Observe:
- Gliding, deliberate swimming along rock faces with frequent short “picking” pauses
- A consistent daytime routine of cruising and inspecting the same routes in your aquascape
- Regular use of caves and overhangs as quick retreat points between passes
- Strong interest in textured surfaces (rockwork and attached growth) while it searches for bite-sized foods
Set up an established, spacious aquarium with both open swimming lanes and plenty of rockwork to explore. Offer multiple small feedings through the day and mix in clam-based and other meaty foods so it has frequent opportunities to recognize food items. Does best with calm tankmates that allow it to feed at its own pace.
Will it usually accept frozen or prepared foods right away?
Many hobbyists start with fresh or frozen clam and other meaty items, then repeat small offerings until the fish begins responding consistently.
Is it normal for this butterflyfish to “peck” all day?
Yes—repeated picking and route-following is a typical foraging pattern as it inspects surfaces and searches for bite-sized foods.
Do hobbyists use any specific feeding method to help it settle in?
Some keepers focus on offering food in the same spot each time (or in a sheltered area) so the fish learns where food appears regularly.
Does it do better introduced alone, or with a companion?
In the wild they’re often seen in pairs, but many aquarists introduce a single specimen first so it can establish a steady routine before adding anything similar.
Should it have lots of hiding places even in a large tank?
Keepers commonly report better day-to-day activity when the aquascape includes several quick retreats (arches, caves, and overhangs) along its swimming path.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
