The Melanesian Blue Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera cymatilis) is a compact Chrysiptera damselfish with an intense blue body that stands out strongly under reef lighting. It stays small, making it a good fit for reef aquariums where you want color concentrated around the rockwork. This species is reported from Papua New Guinea.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops around a favorite rock crevice, with quick turns and stops
- Frequent “hovering” over the rockwork, then sudden darts into open water
- Bold feeding response at the surface and midwater when food hits the tank
- Regular interaction with the same few areas of the aquascape throughout the day
- A consistent “home base” behavior, especially once it settles in
Provide stable rockwork with several tight crevices so it can choose a home base and still have open lanes to swim. Offer a mixed menu (meaty frozen foods plus quality pellets or flakes) in small portions to keep it active and engaged at feeding time. In community setups, it does best when its territory is clearly defined by the aquascape.
Will it stay the same shade of blue all day?
Color often looks deeper under higher-blue spectrum lighting and when the fish is actively patrolling its territory.
Can I keep two together if I add them at the same time?
Pairs sometimes work best when introduced together with multiple hiding choices so each fish can claim its own space.
Does this species spawn in home aquariums?
Like many damselfish, spawning behavior can include choosing a cleaned rock surface or cave area and staying close to it for several days.
Is it normal for it to “pick” at rocks and sand?
Light pecking is common and usually looks like grazing and inspecting the rockwork for edible bits.
If I ever need to move it, what is the easiest approach?
Many keepers have the best results using a clear fish trap baited with the same foods it already rushes to at feeding time.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
