The Nalolo Blenny (Ecsenius nalolo) is a small combtooth blenny that spends much of its day perched on rockwork, grazing and watching activity in the tank. Its compact adult size makes it a practical choice for reef aquariums where you want a fish that stays close to the aquascape and helps with film algae.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “hop-and-dart” movements between favorite perches and crevices
- Regular grazing passes over rock surfaces, especially in established tanks
- Quick, confident dashes into the open at feeding time, then back to a ledge
- A consistent “home base” perch it returns to throughout the day
Provide plenty of live rock with cracks and ledges so it can perch, graze, and settle in quickly. Offer algae-based foods daily (and occasional meaty items) to keep feeding consistent. With stable parameters and a secure lid, it typically becomes a visible, day-active part of the rockwork.
Is it normal for a Nalolo Blenny to “park” in one spot for long periods?
Yes’many combtooth blennies pick a favorite ledge and treat it like a home base, making short laps to graze and then returning to the same perch.
Why does a blenny sometimes wedge itself into tight holes or crevices at night?
This is a common resting routine; they often choose a specific crack in the rock and use it like a sleeping spot.
Can a blenny look pale or “washed out” at times?
Temporary color shifts can happen with rest, stress, or lighting changes, and the fish often returns to normal coloration once it resumes daytime activity.
Why does it perch on corals even when it has plenty of rockwork?
Perching is normal behavior; some individuals simply choose elevated spots. Redirecting perching choices is often about giving multiple ledges at similar height and flow.
Does “pecking” during feeding always mean it’s trying to eat coral?
Not always’some blennies peck at food particles caught on coral surfaces. Target-feeding corals and offering a separate, consistent feeding spot for the fish can reduce this behavior.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
