Assorted Parrotfish (Scarus sp.) are large, rock-grazing herbivores that spend the day scraping algae and natural growth from hard surfaces with a beak-like mouth. In “assorted” mixes, coloration and pattern can vary widely by species and life phase, but the active grazing behavior is consistent.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising and frequent “pecking” at live rock while grazing
- Most active during daylight hours, with regular pauses to forage and investigate surfaces
- Nighttime resting in a favorite rock crevice; some species form a mucus cocoon while sleeping
- Ongoing interest in mature, algae-coated rockwork as a daily routine
Provide a very large aquarium with abundant mature live rock and open swimming lanes, and plan for strong filtration to match a heavy-feeding grazer. Offer nori/seaweed plus herbivore-focused frozen foods and pellets multiple times daily for best long-term conditioning.
How long until it stops hiding after introduction?
Many keepers report a settling-in period that can take a couple weeks before it stays out consistently.
Is the “slime bubble/cocoon” at night normal?
Some parrotfish species form a mucus cocoon while sleeping, especially when first settling in.
What do people feed when there’s not much algae to graze?
A common approach is heavy nori feeding plus spirulina-based foods to keep grazing opportunities constant.
Do they need something hard to rasp on besides rock?
Some hobbyists use DIY feeding/grazing blocks so the fish can rasp while picking up food particles.
Do they change color over time?
Color can shift as the fish matures and transitions between life phases, so appearance may change notably.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
