The Four-lined Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus tetrataenia) is a small lined wrasse from the Pacific that spends its day working through rockwork and crevices. It’s commonly chosen for pest-control behavior, where it patrols surfaces and picks at tiny hitchhikers such as worms and nuisance snails.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick, stop-and-go swimming as it weaves in and out of rockwork
- Frequent “inspecting” of coral bases and frag plugs while hunting microfauna
- A regular circuit around the tank that becomes more consistent as it settles in
- Wedge-sleeping in the rockwork at night (often with a light mucus cocoon)
Provide a mature reef with plenty of live rock tunnels and multiple hiding gaps so it can keep a steady patrol route. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and other finely sized frozen foods) in regular portions so it stays active and engaged.
Does this wrasse need a sand bed to sleep?
No—this genus typically sleeps wedged into the rockwork, sometimes forming a mucus cocoon at night.
Why does it spend so much time “pecking” at rocks and coral bases?
That’s normal foraging behavior; it’s searching for tiny pods and other microfauna living on hard surfaces.
How can I add new fish after a Four-lined Wrasse is established?
Using an acclimation box and adding the newcomer with lights reduced (and rockwork slightly adjusted) often helps introductions go more smoothly.
Is it normal for it to disappear for stretches during the day?
Yes—many individuals take extended breaks in the rockwork and then resume patrolling in short bursts.
Do I need a lid even if the tank has a rim?
A tight-fitting cover is strongly recommended; wrasses are known to launch upward when startled or during fast chasing bursts.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
