Centropyge nox (Midnight Angelfish) is a dwarf (pygmy) angelfish that spends much of the day browsing rock surfaces, which can help with light film algae in established reef tanks. Adults are uniformly bluish-black with a small yellow patch just behind the gill cover, often searched as a “Midnight” or “Black Nox” dwarf angelfish.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops through the rockwork, then long pauses to graze one area closely
- Regular in-and-out movement through caves and overhangs as it browses and resets its route
- A “now you see it, now you don’t” look’especially in tanks with darker backgrounds
- Strong curiosity at feeding time, with quick recognition of the usual feeding spot
Provide plenty of live rock with tunnels and shaded ledges so it can graze and retreat between passes. Offer a varied omnivore menu (marine algae/seaweed plus quality frozen and pellet foods) to match its natural browsing behavior. With stable parameters and consistent feeding, it settles into a predictable daily route through the reef.
Is it normal for a Midnight Angelfish to “disappear” against a dark background?
Yes’many keepers report they can look like a moving shadow until they turn and catch side lighting.
Why do I sometimes notice faint speckling or lighter marks on the body up close?
On very dark fish, reflective scales and angle-dependent sheen can show up as pale flecks under certain lighting.
What’s a good first-food plan if it ignores flakes at first?
Many hobbyists have better luck starting with frozen foods and a small sheet of nori/seaweed, then mixing in pellets once it’s eating reliably.
Can I keep it with another dwarf angelfish?
In larger, rock-rich aquariums, keepers often have the best results when each fish can claim its own cave zone and food is offered in more than one spot.
Does it usually hide a lot when first introduced?
A short “cave phase” is common; once it learns the tank’s routine (especially feeding times), most begin making wider, more confident loops through the rockwork.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
