Centropyge nox (Midnight Angelfish) is a dwarf (pygmy) angelfish that spends much of the day browsing rock surfaces, which can help with light film algae in established reef tanks. Adults are uniformly bluish-black with a small yellow patch just behind the gill cover, often searched as a “Midnight” or “Black Nox” dwarf angelfish.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops through the rockwork, then long pauses to graze one area closely
- Regular in-and-out movement through caves and overhangs as it browses and resets its route
- A “now you see it, now you don’t” look’especially in tanks with darker backgrounds

Provide plenty of live rock with tunnels and shaded ledges so it can graze and retreat between passes. Offer a varied omnivore menu (marine algae/seaweed plus quality frozen and pellet foods) to match its natural browsing behavior. Is it normal for a Midnight Angelfish to “disappear” against a dark background?
