This Violet Jellyfish (Mastigia sp.) is a spotted lagoon jellyfish type with a rounded bell and slow, rhythmic pulsing that reads clearly in a dedicated jellyfish display. In nature, Mastigias are commonly associated with warm lagoons and marine lakes and can rely partly on symbiotic algae while also capturing planktonic food.
What You’ll Observe:
- A steady bell pulse that keeps it hovering in the water column
- Drifting loops as it rides circular kreisel/tumbler flow patterns
- Gentle orientation shifts toward brighter areas of the tank during the light cycle
- Most activity happening in open water instead of perching on rockwork
To succeed long-term, provide a jellyfish-safe kreisel/tumbler-style environment that keeps the animal suspended without sharp corners, and use protected/screened intakes. Offer fine meaty plankton foods in small portions on a consistent schedule, and keep lighting stable if you’re maintaining a zooxanthellae-associated lagoon jelly setup.
Is it normal for a “violet” Mastigia to look more brown/gold under some lights?
Yes’many Mastigias color cues shift with spectrum and intensity, and spotting can look softer under warmer lighting.
Do they need “perfect circles,” or can a cube tank work if the flow is right?
Many hobbyists focus more on creating an even circular tumble (no dead zones) than on the tank shape itself.
Why does it keep collecting near the surface at times?
Often it’s following the strongest, smoothest part of the circulation pattern; slight flow or water-level tweaks can redistribute the rotation.
Will it eat regular frozen foods like mysis?
Most keepers have better consistency with very small plankton-sized foods rather than large chunks, so capture and digestion stay efficient.
Can I keep more than one together for a fuller display?
Usually yes if the system has enough volume and circulation to keep individuals separated and suspended without frequent contact.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
