The Blackline Blenny (Meiacanthus nigrolineatus) is a small reef-associated blenny known for a slim body with a distinct black lateral stripe and contrasting yellow-to-green and blue tones. In aquariums it spends much of its time hovering and perching around rockwork, adding steady movement without disrupting corals.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “dart and pause” swims between favorite perches and crevices
- Regular hovering in the open water near the rock line, especially when food is added
- Quick, confident feeding on small frozen foods, finely chopped meaty items, and quality prepared foods
- A consistent routine of returning to the same ledges and holes to rest and watch the tank
To help it settle in, provide plenty of live rock with multiple small caves and ledges, plus open lanes for short swims. Offer a varied mix of small meaty foods along with a dependable prepared staple so it can eat well at every feeding. Maintain stable reef parameters and consistent feeding times so it learns your schedule quickly.
Can I keep more than one Blackline Blenny in the same tank?
It’s often easiest as a single specimen, but in larger systems some hobbyists have success by adding them with ample rockwork and multiple “perch zones” so each fish can claim its own space.
Why does it spend so much time hovering instead of “scooting” on rocks like other blennies?
This species commonly mixes perching with open-water hovering near the rock line, especially around feeding time, so the behavior is normal and typical for the fish.
Will it take pellets or does it only eat frozen foods?
Many hobbyists report they’ll accept pellets once they recognize them as food; starting with smaller pellet sizes and feeding at the same spot each time helps.
Does it need multiple small feedings, or is one larger feeding enough?
Aquarists often find it does best when it reliably gets food at each feeding event, which can mean splitting the daily amount into two smaller feedings if your schedule allows.
What should I look for in the first week to know it’s settling in?
A good sign is a consistent “home base” perch plus steady interest in food’coming out quickly when you approach the tank or when food hits the water.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
