The Linear Blenny (Ecsenius lineatus) is a combtooth blenny with fine lengthwise striping and a rock-perching, “peek-from-a-hole” style that keeps it visible without constant open-water swimming. It spends much of the day grazing film algae and inspecting rock surfaces, making it a practical pick for reef tanks that benefit from extra algae management.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rock ledges and in small crevices, then darting out to graze nearby surfaces
- Short, repeatable patrol routes along the same rock faces as it feeds
- Quick, accurate “pecks” at the rock while it grazes, especially during daylight hours
- A tendency to claim a favorite nook and return to it between feeding laps
To succeed with this species, provide mature live rock with natural grazing area and a few tight caves it can adopt as a home base. Offer a mix of algae-based foods plus small frozen foods so it stays well-fed and stays focused on normal grazing. It does best when the tank layout gives it multiple perches and clear line-of-sight breaks.
Will a Linear Blenny “kiss” or peck at SPS, and is that always eating?
Many hobbyists report occasional pecking that looks like coral-eating, but it can also be grazing algae or taking mouthfuls of coral mucus. Consistent repeated pecking on the same spots is the pattern people most often associate with actual damage.
Why does mine hide for long stretches and then suddenly become active?
A common pattern is choosing one secure hole early on and using it as a home base. As it learns the tank’s routines and feeding schedule, it usually does longer grazing laps away from that spot.
Is it normal for it to pick at the sand or glass instead of just the rocks?
Yes’keepers often describe “grazing rounds” that include rocks, glass, and overflows where film algae grows. This is typically the same feeding behavior expressed on different surfaces.
Can two Linear Blennies live together if they’re added at the same time?
Discussions frequently point out that success depends on having clearly separated perching territories and plenty of hiding options. People have the best results when the fish naturally pair up, rather than forcing two similar blennies into the same few favorite holes.
Do they learn to take prepared foods reliably, or do they only graze?
Hobbyists commonly report that once settled, they’ll take frozen and pellet foods consistently’especially when those foods include algae content. Many also note they still graze throughout the day even when they eat well at feeding time.
