Smith’s Blenny (Meiacanthus smithii) is a small fang blenny with a mostly blue body and a dark stripe that runs from the chin through the eye and into the dorsal fin. It spends much of the day moving in and out of rockwork and hovering in the open, so it shows well in reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick dashes between favorite caves and ledges, with frequent hovering in open water
- Regular “patrol” loops around the rockwork, especially at feeding time
- A consistent nighttime routine’settling into a crevice and showing a darker rest coloration
Provide live rock with multiple small holes and overhangs so it can retreat and reappear on its own schedule. Offer small meaty foods (chopped crustaceans, enriched brine, and mixed frozen blends) in small portions through the day to keep it engaged and feeding well.
Will it bite during tank maintenance?
Most keepers report it ignores hands and tools, but like other fang blennies it may nip if grabbed or startled; using a net/container and gloves keeps handling simple.
Why does it look darker at night?
A darker “sleep” coloration is commonly reported and is part of its normal day/night routine.
Does it need a specific “blenny hole”?
It usually picks one or two favorite crevices and will rotate spots; giving several tight rock openings helps it settle in.
Do I need a lid for this species?
Many hobbyists recommend a mesh cover since quick, upward dashes can happen when the fish is surprised.
Can I keep more than one Smith’s Blenny?
Some aquarists keep multiples when added together with lots of rockwork, but most start with a single fish unless they have a confirmed pair.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
