The Hutchi Anthias (Pseudanthias huchtii) is a Western Pacific anthias known for a yellow-green body with a distinct orange cheek stripe and highlighted fins. In the aquarium it’s most often kept as a small group where one fish takes on the dominant “male” role and the rest remain female.
What You’ll Observe:
- Midwater hovering and short, quick dashes into the water column at feeding time
- The dominant fish spending more time out front, especially when the group is settled in
- A consistent “hangout zone” where flow carries food past the group
- Regular retreats into rockwork, then returning to the same open-water lane
Provide open swimming space with nearby rockwork ledges and caves so the group can stay visible while still feeling secure. Offer small, frequent portions of meaty foods that stay suspended in the water column to match their natural feeding style. In a group, start with multiple similarly sized fish so the social structure forms smoothly.
How do you get Hutchi Anthias to take pellets?
Start with very small pellets and mix them into the water right after they’re already in “feeding mode” from frozen food; many keepers find consistency matters more than the exact brand.
Do they always need to be “in the flow” to eat well?
They often feed more confidently when food drifts past them in a steady current, so directing flow across their usual swimming lane can improve feeding response.
What does it look like when one starts becoming the dominant “male”?
You’ll usually see one fish staying out more, posturing slightly, and becoming more assertive about the group’s spacing as the hierarchy settles.
Is some chasing within the group normal?
Brief, low-contact chasing is commonly reported during early acclimation and when the group is establishing rank, then it typically tapers down once routines are consistent.
How do people keep up frequent feeding without overloading the tank?
A common approach is splitting the same total daily amount into smaller portions (often using an auto-feeder for dry food) so the fish eat more efficiently per feeding.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
