The Asian Blackstripe Dottyback is a rockwork-hugging carnivore that’s often chosen to help manage small pest populations in reef tanks. It has an elongated body with a bold dark stripe through the face and along the upper body, a look that stands out even when it’s weaving through caves and overhangs. This species is found in the western Pacific and can reach about 12 cm (around 5 inches) at full size.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, fast “patrol laps” around a favorite cave or crevice
- Frequent perching and hovering near the rockwork, then quick darts into cover
- A consistent routine of popping out rapidly at feeding time and returning to its spot
- Territorial “claiming” of a specific hole, ledge, or shaded corridor in the aquascape
Provide a rockscape with multiple tight caves and swim-throughs so it can establish a home base and still move freely through the tank. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and other frozen carnivore blends) in regular feedings to support steady body condition. In mixed fish communities, it does best when tankmates are confident eaters that won’t be crowded out at meal time.
Will I see it all day, or does it “disappear” sometimes?
It’s normal for dottybacks to spend stretches of time tucked into rockwork, especially when they’re settling in or when the room is quiet. Most owners see them become more consistent as they lock onto a favorite cave and feeding routine.
Does it usually bother cleaner shrimp or small hermits?
Many hobbyists keep dottybacks in reef tanks without coral issues, but small mobile inverts can still be viewed as food depending on the individual fish. If your goal is a shrimp-focused display, plan your stocking so your shrimp have rockwork shelter and a head start.
Why does it act different after new fish are added?
It often responds to changes by “re-checking” its territory and doing more patrol behavior for a few days. Keeping feeding consistent and maintaining multiple caves helps the tank settle back into a normal rhythm.
Is it compatible with other rock-dwelling fish like wrasses, blennies, or gobies?
It can work well, but the best matches are fish that don’t all want the exact same cave network. When you build several distinct “zones” in the rockwork, each fish is more likely to pick a lane.
What’s the easiest way to remove one if I ever need to?
Most keepers have the best luck using a baited fish trap and only offering food in the trap area until the fish is comfortable entering. Leaving the trap in place long enough for it to become part of the scenery usually improves success.
