The Banded Zebra Flounder (Zebrias zebra) is a sand-dwelling flatfish with bold, dark banding and an oval profile that helps it blend into open-bottom reef and lagoon zones. It naturally settles into sand and may partially bury itself with only the eyes showing while it watches the area around it.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long stretches of stillness on the sand, followed by short “wave-like” swims to a new resting spot
- Quick burying behavior, especially after lights changes or when first introduced
- A feeding response that looks like short, fast strikes at food that lands nearby
- Camouflage that makes it seem to “disappear” against the substrate
Provide an established aquarium with a calm, open sandy zone so it can settle in and rest naturally. Offer small meaty foods that sink (or place food on the sand in a consistent spot) so it can feed in the way it’s built to. It does best with tankmates that allow it space along the bottom and won’t crowd its favorite resting areas.
Is it normal if I almost never see it during the day?
Yes—many keepers report these flatfish spend long periods buried or perfectly camouflaged on the sand, then become noticeably more active around feeding time.
Do they prefer being fed in the water column or on the sand?
Many hobbyists have the best success by letting food sink or by placing food on the substrate so the fish can strike from its resting position.
Why do “zebra flounder/sole” IDs seem all over the place?
“Zebra flounder” is used for multiple similar-looking soles/flounders in the trade, so confirming the exact genus/species after purchase is commonly recommended by experienced keepers.
Do all zebra soles need brackish or cooler water?
No—some lookalike species discussed by hobbyists may be brackish-leaning, but Zebrias zebra is recorded from marine and brackish environments, so accurate ID matters.
Can I keep two together?
Some aquarists buy more than one, but success usually comes down to having enough open sand area for both to choose separate resting spots and settle without competing for the same space.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
