The Black Angler (Antennarius commersoni) is a jet-black frogfish/anglerfish with scattered pale markings and a compact, perch-and-wait body shape. It uses a small lure on the head to bring food within striking range, and its coloration can slowly shift in tone to match its surroundings.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on rockwork and walking short distances with its fins
- Long pauses in one spot, then a sudden, fast feeding strike
- Using the lure (esca) during hunting, especially around feeding time
- Picking a favorite ledge or cave opening and watching the tank from it
Provide stable live rock structures with easy perches and open areas in front of them so your angler can sit comfortably and feed cleanly. Offer appropriately sized meaty marine foods by tongs/feeding stick once it’s settled, and keep a simple routine that allows time between meals for full digestion. A calm, low-competition setup helps it stay visible and consistent at feeding time.
How do I transition a Black Angler from live food to frozen?
Start by getting consistent strikes on familiar live foods, then offer similarly sized thawed items on a feeding stick with gentle swimming motion until it recognizes the presentation.
How often should I feed once it’s eating prepared foods well?
Most keepers do best with a few well-sized meals per week; smaller/younger specimens usually do better with slightly more frequent, smaller portions.
Why does it walk and sit instead of swimming all day?
That perching behavior is normal for frogfish’much of its time is spent staying still, then moving in short bursts between spots.
Is it normal for the color to look different after a few weeks?
Yes. Many individuals gradually shift shade to better match rock, sponge-like textures, or darker tank areas.
Can I keep two anglers together if they’re similar size?
Most hobbyists keep them singly, since close-size differences can still lead to one attempting to eat the other over time.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
