The Black & White Heniochus Butterfly (Heniochus acuminatus) is often called a longfin bannerfish or wimplefish, with two dark bands over a white body and yellow accents toward the rear fins. Its extended dorsal “banner” is a defining feature and is typically carried upright as it cruises open water near rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady, midwater swimming with frequent looping passes along the front glass
- A “pairing” tendency, where two individuals often track and move together once settled
- The dorsal streamer waving as it turns, which makes its motion easy to spot across the tank
- Regular pick-and-search behavior around live rock between feedings
Provide a mature, stable aquarium with open swimming room plus caves and overhangs for quick cover. Offer a varied mix of frozen and prepared foods multiple times per day so it stays active and engaged. If keeping a pair, introducing both at the same time helps them settle into a shared routine.
How can I tell Heniochus acuminatus apart from the similar “schooling bannerfish” types?
Look closely at the pattern edges and body shape and compare to verified ID photos; many stores label multiple Heniochus species under the same common name.
Is it normal for the dorsal “banner” to look short on a new specimen?
Yes—streamers are sometimes nipped or damaged in holding systems and may appear shorter for a while.
Do they usually stay out in the open or hide most of the day?
Most keepers report they become front-and-center once they learn the tank’s feeding schedule and have consistent, low-stress traffic around the aquarium.
Will it accept pellets/flake, or does it need frozen foods long-term?
Many transition to pellets over time, but they do best when pellets are just one part of a rotating menu.
Can I keep one with a Moorish idol look-alike theme (similar body shapes)?
In larger systems it’s commonly done; keeping feeding stations consistent helps reduce “following and crowding” at mealtimes.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
