The Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara) is a Caribbean basslet with a purple body and a diagonal black “cap” across the head. It’s a reef-safe fish that naturally favors rock faces, crevices, and overhangs, adding constant motion close to your aquascape.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering close to a chosen cave, then making short, quick dashes into the open water
- Resting or swimming upside down under ledges when tucked into its rockwork “home base”
- Coming out most consistently when you approach the tank and at feeding time
- Returning to the same set of crevices day after day as it settles into a routine
Provide plenty of live rock with multiple caves and shaded ledges so it can choose a retreat. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and finely chopped seafood) in small portions on a consistent schedule to keep it active in the water column. In community reefs, give it a defined “home area” in the rockwork so it can settle in and behave predictably.
How long is it normal to go without seeing a new Blackcap Basslet?
Many keepers report an initial “disappear” phase of several days to a week or more while it claims a cave; once it connects your presence with feeding, it tends to show itself more reliably.
Why does it suddenly open its mouth wide at another fish?
That quick “gape” is a common gramma display used to hold space around its cave; it’s usually a brief warning rather than extended chasing.
What’s with the sand-spitting at night?
Aquarists often see blackcaps pick up and relocate sand to shape a tunnel or cave entrance, then spit it out in a chosen spot’often after lights out.
Can it be kept with a Royal Gramma or another basslet?
Some hobbyists succeed when there are clearly separated caves and the fish aren’t forced onto the same rock face, though brief face-to-face posturing can still happen. Adding similar basslets at the same time (with lots of rock structure) is commonly reported to go more smoothly than adding one later.
Does its color vary between individuals?
Yes’keepers often notice different mixes of purple and black between individuals, and the fish can look darker when it’s under a ledge versus out in open light.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
