The Blue Devil Damsel (Chrysiptera cyanea) is a small, solid-blue damselfish that shows strong color under reef lighting. Adult males may develop yellow on the snout and a yellow-to-orange tail, while females and juveniles often show a small dark spot near the rear of the dorsal fin base. In aquariums it typically stays close to rockwork, weaving in and out of crevices as it patrols a chosen area.
What You’ll Observe:
- Quick, darting swims between a favorite cave and nearby open water
- A “patrol loop” around the same section of rockwork throughout the day
- Confident feeding behavior—often first in line when food hits the water
- Regular use of tight cracks and overhangs as a home base
Provide a rockscape with multiple caves and sight breaks so it can establish a home base without dominating the whole display. Offer a varied mix of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods in smaller portions across the day for consistent feeding response. It tends to settle best when your more peaceful fish are already established, and it does well in layouts that give every fish its own lane and shelter.
Is it normal for a Blue Devil to “own” one rock and keep returning to the same cave?
Yes—many will pick a single crevice or overhang as a home base and repeatedly patrol the same short route around it.
Is it normal for them to bite your hand or tools during tank maintenance?
It can be normal for a settled-in fish to investigate and defend its home area when your hand is near its cave, especially during cleaning or feeding.
Do Blue Devil Damsels change color as they mature?
They can—males may show more yellow on the face and tail as they mature, while juveniles/females more commonly show a small dark spot near the dorsal fin area.
If I want a pair, what usually works better: two large fish or two smaller fish?
Many hobbyists have better results starting with two smaller fish introduced at the same time, so they can sort out roles while settling into the same rockwork.
If I ever need to move one to another tank, what method tends to work best?
A clear fish trap placed near its usual cave and baited with its regular food often works well, especially if you leave it in place long enough for the fish to swim in confidently.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
