The Blue Face Koi Tang is a rare color-morph of the Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas), known for a blue facial mask and koi-style mottling over a brown-to-gold body. In reef tanks it’s an active grazer that spends the day cruising rockwork and picking at algae.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady laps through open water and along the rock line
- Frequent “stop-and-graze” pecking on surfaces and nori
- Noticeable pattern and shade shifts under different lighting
How to Succeed: Provide open swimming room with rock arches and multiple grazing zones. Offer nori regularly along with a varied herbivore diet so it stays active and engaged in your display.
Will the pattern stay the same?
Many keepers see the mask and mottling shift as it settles in.
How do I get it to eat nori?
Start with a small sheet secured to a rock, then transition to a clip.
Best way to add it with other tangs?
Use a clear acclimation box and do a small rockwork reset before release.
Why does it look pale at night?
It often lightens while resting and returns to normal after lights-on.
Will it help with hair algae?
It grazes short algae and films; consistency improves results over time.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
