Blue Fin Watchman Goby

The Blue Fin Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus fasciatus) is a sand-dwelling goby with a banded body pattern and noticeable blue accents in the unpaired fins. It naturally lives in sandy burrows on reef-associated bottoms and is known for sharing a burrow with pistol shrimp in the wild.

What You’ll Observe:

• Perching at the edge of a burrow entrance, then backing in tail-first when startled
• Short “hops” across the sand, with most activity focused around one chosen home area
• A quick response at feeding time, especially when food is delivered close to its burrow
• If paired with a pistol shrimp, frequent “standing guard” while sand is moved and the burrow is reshaped

Provide a stable rock-and-sand layout with open sand near the front or sides of your aquascape so it can pick a burrow site. Offer small meaty foods (frozen or prepared) and place some servings near its home area so it can feed confidently. With consistent lighting and routine, it settles into a predictable daily pattern and becomes easy to spot.

How long does it take to pair with a pistol shrimp?
Some pairs connect within a day, while others take a week or two; once they “agree” on a burrow, you usually see more consistent shared behavior.

Is it normal if it hides for long stretches after introduction?
Yes—many watchman-type gobies spend early days (or longer) staying close to cover and only showing briefly, especially when the tank is active.

Why is it swimming high in the water or “glass surfing” at first?
This can show up during the first day or two as it adjusts and searches for a secure home area; once it adopts a burrow site, this usually tapers off.

Will it (or its shrimp partner) rearrange sand and move small items?
Burrow-building commonly shifts sand around the entrance, and loose frags or small shells near the burrow can get buried or relocated as the tunnel is maintained.

Can its coloration look different from day to day?
It can appear lighter or darker depending on mood, lighting, and where it is spending time (open sand vs. under ledges), and many keepers notice changes as it settles in.
