The Boenacki (Blueline) Grouper (Blue-lined Hind) is a hind grouper with a light red body marked by narrow blue lines and dark blue accents on the fins. It’s a reef-associated Indo-Pacific predator that spends time near rock ledges and caves, then moves out quickly at feeding time.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite cave or overhang and returning to it between short patrols
- Slow, deliberate movement along the rockwork followed by quick bursts toward food
- A strong meal-time response—often meeting you at the front glass when it recognizes the routine
- More time out in the open after the first few days as it settles into the tank
Provide substantial rock structure with multiple roomy hiding places and open lanes for short sprints. Offer meaty marine foods (krill, shrimp, squid, chopped seafood) in appropriately sized pieces a few times per week and vary the menu. Select tankmates that are too large to be swallowed, and plan on keeping only one blueline grouper per system for stable social dynamics.
Will it spend most of the day in the rocks at first?
Many keepers report it may stay tucked into a cave early on, then begin showing itself more regularly once it learns the tank’s routine and feeding schedule.
Why do people recommend adding a blueline grouper last?
In mixed predator tanks, hobbyists often add the grouper after other fish are already established so the social pecking order is more consistent.
Is it normal for it to claim one specific home cave?
Yes—many groupers repeatedly use one primary hiding spot and treat it like a base, especially when resting.
How do most owners offer food—broadcast feeding or target feeding?
A lot of keepers prefer using tongs or a feeding stick so the grouper gets its share cleanly and learns a consistent feeding station.
Do I need a lid or screen top on a predator tank with a grouper?
Many aquarists use a cover because fast feeding moments can startle tankmates, and some commonly kept companions (like triggers) are known jumpers.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
