The Broomtail Wrasse (Cheilinus lunulatus) is a large wrasse from the Red Sea and nearby Western Indian Ocean regions, known for its fringed “broom-like” tail and bold adult coloration (green head with blue lips and darker fins). It’s an active predator that naturally feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates like mollusks and other meaty fare.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular “patrolling” laps along rockwork and open swim lanes, with frequent inspection of cracks and crevices
- A fish that learns your routine and often comes out early when it expects food
- Strong feeding responses to larger meaty items (shrimp, squid, clam) and similar seafood-based foods
- A noticeably interactive presence—many keepers describe it as constantly “watching” activity outside the tank
For best results, provide a very large aquarium with stable rockwork, ample swimming room, and consistent oxygen-rich circulation. Offer a varied, seafood-forward diet daily (and adjust portion size to the fish’s body condition and activity). Choose tankmates that are confident, similarly sized, and not easily outcompeted at feeding time.
How often should I feed a Broomtail Wrasse once it’s eating prepared foods?
Most keepers do best with daily feeding, and many prefer splitting that into smaller meals so the fish stays engaged and consistent at feeding time.
Will it accept pellets, or does it stay on fresh/frozen seafood?
Many will take a mixed diet over time. Starting with shrimp/clam/squid and then pairing that with pellets during the same feeding window often improves long-term flexibility.
Is it normal for this wrasse to “watch” you or follow you at the glass?
Yes—this species is commonly described as very aware of people and tank-side movement, especially once it associates you with feeding.
How big does a tankmate need to be to avoid being seen as food?
As a general rule, fish that are clearly too large to be swallowed are usually ignored as prey; very small fish that could fit in its mouth are the ones most likely to disappear.
Does this wrasse need extra oxygenation compared to other fish?
It helps. Strong surface agitation and steady gas exchange tend to keep large, active wrasses behaving normally and feeding consistently, especially in warm systems.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
