The Brown Banded Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) is a bottom-dwelling bamboo shark from the Indo–West Pacific that’s commonly kept in large, sand-bottom predator systems. Juveniles show bold dark bands, and adults become more uniformly brown while growing into a powerful, seafloor cruiser that uses its fins to “walk” and wedge into caves.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spending long stretches resting under ledges, then cruising more as the lights go down
- “Walking” along the bottom and weaving through rockwork instead of open-water swimming
- A strong feeding response to meaty marine foods offered in bite-size pieces
- Using caves and overhangs as a regular home base in the tank
How to Succeed: Provide a very large, wide-footprint aquarium with fine sand and multiple sturdy shelters, with all rockwork and decor secured for a strong, digging fish. Offer a varied menu of marine meaty foods (like shrimp, scallop, squid, and fish flesh) and feed to satiation on a steady schedule.
Is it normal for this shark to “do nothing” most of the day?
Yes—many keepers observe long resting periods, with more activity later in the day and at night.
How do hobbyists get them eating prepared foods consistently?
A common approach is offering bite-size marine meaty foods in the same spot and at the same times, using tongs to keep feeding controlled and repeatable.
Can you keep more than one bamboo shark together?
In very large systems, some hobbyists keep multiples; success is better when each shark has its own resting area and there’s space to spread out at feeding time.
Do they prefer rock caves, or will PVC-style shelters work?
Most setups focus on providing shaded “overhang” style cover; the key is having multiple secure, smooth-edged hideouts the shark can turn around in.
Will it rearrange a reef-style aquascape?
Keepers frequently note they’re strong and can shift unsecured pieces while exploring, so stable structures and firmly attached decor matter in mixed displays.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
