Often chosen for pest control, Burgess-type butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptasia anemones while adding a clean black-and-cream pattern that stands out in a reef display. “Hybrid” individuals can show slightly different bar and wedge shapes, but the overall look stays true to the Burgessi-style butterfly profile.

What You’ll Observe:

• Cruising the rockwork and outer ledges, making short, precise “pecks” at surfaces
• Spending time around overhangs and shaded areas, then moving out for meals
• Quickly learning a feeding routine and showing up on time when food hits the water
• Looser pair-style behavior in larger systems, including following and pacing together

Provide established live rock with plenty of swim lanes plus a few calm “resting zones” (overhangs and caves). Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, chopped clam, and quality frozen blends) in multiple feedings to keep it active and consistently grazing. Does best when tankmates allow it to eat without constant crowding.

Will it eat Aiptasia right away?
Many start showing interest after they’re settled and eating well; once acclimated, they often sample nuisance anemones during normal grazing.

Why does it hang around shaded rock and overhangs?
This is a common day-to-day pattern for deep-reef butterfly types—using ledges as “home base” and moving out to forage.

Can I keep it with other Roaops-type butterflies (like Tinkeri/Declivis)?
In larger, stable systems it’s often done by adding fish with similar size at the same time and giving multiple “lanes” and resting spots.
