Chameleon Wrasse

The Chameleon Wrasse is an active sand-and-rockwork forager that helps reduce common reef pests by hunting small benthic invertebrates. Color and pattern can shift with age and mood, with some fish showing darker juvenile striping and adults developing more complex spotting and striping. Native to the Eastern Pacific, it’s a lively choice for larger reef tanks where constant movement is part of the look.

What You’ll Observe:

• Patrols rock edges and open sand, stopping often to inspect crevices and substrate
• Dives into the sand at lights-out and reappears on its own schedule
• Spends the day weaving through the aquascape rather than hovering in one spot
• Becomes noticeably bolder once it learns the tank’s feeding rhythm

To help it settle in, provide a mature aquascape with open swimming room plus a sand bed deep enough for nighttime burying. Offer a mix of meaty frozen foods and quality pellets so it can feed quickly alongside more competitive fish. In mixed reefs, it’s best paired with sturdier, established invertebrates and plenty of hiding structure so everyone can keep their space.

How long can it stay buried after you add it?
It’s common for a burrowing wrasse to spend several days mostly under the sand, then begin showing up more consistently once it has a routine.

Why does it “disappear” at the same time every day?
Many sand-sleeping wrasses follow a very steady lights-out schedule and will head for the sand before or right as the tank dims.

Is it normal for its colors/markings to look different week to week?
Yes—juvenile-to-adult changes are real, and day-to-day intensity can vary with mood, hierarchy, and lighting.

Will it constantly redo the sandbed or bury small frags?
Most of the sand movement is short, targeted dives; placing loose frags on stable plugs/rocks usually prevents anything from getting shifted.

Does it tend to bother other wrasses once established?
It usually ignores dissimilar wrasses, but introductions go smoothest when new wrasses have plenty of rockwork lanes and separate “sleep zones.”
