The Chrysurus Angelfish (Pomacanthus chrysurus), also called the Goldtail or Earspot Angelfish, is a large Pomacanthus angelfish with a dark body lined by fine pale vertical bars and a distinctly yellow tail. Adults keep a striped look similar to juveniles, with a darker face and a noticeable dark spot high on the body. This species comes from the western Indian Ocean and is an uncommon find in the aquarium trade.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady cruising along the rockwork with repeated “patrol” routes through the tank
- Frequent investigating of crevices and surfaces, especially once it learns the aquascape
- A fish that becomes very owner-aware and comes out quickly at feeding time
- Regular use of caves and overhangs as preferred rest zones, especially at night
For best results, provide a large, mature aquarium with open swimming space plus multiple caves and shaded ledges. Offer a varied menu (including algae-based foods and angelfish preparations with sponge matter) so it can graze and take prepared foods confidently. Many keepers see the smoothest introductions when new angels are given a controlled “meet and greet” period before full release alongside established tankmates.
Do Chrysurus Angelfish keep their striped “juvenile-style” pattern as they grow?
Yes—this is one of the Pomacanthus angels that retains a striped look into adulthood, with the adult pattern staying relatively similar to the juvenile.
Is it normal for a new Chrysurus to stay tucked into rockwork at first?
Many hobbyists report they become much more outgoing after they settle in and start associating you with food, often greeting you at the glass.
Can a Chrysurus be kept with other “show” angels like a Regal Angelfish?
It can work, but keepers have noted that a Chrysurus may intimidate more reserved angels, so introductions and hierarchy management matter.
Why do Chrysurus Angelfish seem to appear only occasionally for sale?
Hobbyists often mention they’re collected from Africa and may show up in the trade in waves, so availability can be seasonal.
Do they tend to single out any specific coral types when kept “with caution”?
Individual behavior varies: some keepers report occasional interest in zoanthids/palys, while others report little to no coral attention in their systems.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
