The Citron Clown Goby (Gobiodon citrinus) is a compact, reef-associated goby with a lemon-yellow body and fine blue facial lines. Native to Indo-West Pacific reefs, it’s often seen perched in and around branching coral habitat, giving it the classic “coral goby” look that’s popular for nano reef tanks. Its small size and perch-and-watch behavior make it a great choice when you want activity in the rockwork rather than constant open-water swimming.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite perch (ledge, branch, or coral skeleton) and returning to it repeatedly
- Short, quick dashes into the water column at feeding time, then back to its “home” spot
- Spending most of the day posted up in the rockwork where it can watch the tank
- If kept as a pair, two fish staying close to the same area and sharing nearby perches
Provide plenty of small ledges and branching structure so it can perch comfortably and settle in quickly. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, finely chopped seafood, and other small frozen items) in modest portions, and feed in a way that lets it grab bites without rushing. It does best with peaceful tankmates and extra perching spots when keeping more than one.
Will a citron clown goby bother Acropora or other SPS frags?
Many hobbyists report that perch-heavy clown gobies can keep SPS polyps pulled in and may pick at tissue on some frags. In larger, established colonies the impact can be much lower, so it often comes down to your specific corals and the individual fish.
Is it normal for a citron clown goby to be gray, brown, or even black instead of bright yellow?
Yes—keepers commonly see multiple color forms and color shifts over time. If it’s eating and behaving normally, the color is often just natural variation rather than a problem.
Why does it “sit” in one spot so much?
That’s typical for coral gobies—they’re built to perch and watch from a small territory. You’ll still see bursts of movement, especially during feeding or when it changes perches.
Can I keep two citron clown gobies together?
Some aquarists do best by adding two at the same time and giving them multiple separate perches to choose from. If one fish starts claiming the only prime perch, you may see persistent chasing until territories are sorted out.
Do citron clown gobies spawn in reef tanks, and what does it look like?
Pairs may deposit eggs on a hard surface near their chosen perch, and the male typically guards them. The larvae are planktonic, so raising them in a mixed reef tank is uncommon without a dedicated setup.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
