Deepwater Anthias (Pseudanthias kashiwae) is a deep-reef fairy anthias known in the trade for its red-to-pink body tones with contrasting yellow accents. It spends much of its time in the water column near rock structure, picking planktonic foods from the flow.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovers in midwater and “faces into” the current near ledges and rock overhangs
- Makes quick, repeated dashes into the open when food hits the water
- Uses the same few areas as a home base, especially during the first week
- Shows short display bursts (fin flares and quick turns) around other midwater fish
To help it settle in, provide a rockscape with shaded pockets plus open swimming room, and keep flow moderate so foods stay suspended. Offer small plankton-sized foods in several small servings through the day to match its natural feeding rhythm.
Will it change sex like other anthias?
Many anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites, so the dominant fish in a group can shift toward male coloration and behavior over time.
Why does it “hover” in one spot for long periods?
This is a normal anthias posture—many individuals hold position in the current and make short feeding runs rather than constantly cruising the whole tank.
Can I mix this Deepwater Anthias with other anthias species?
It’s often more predictable when kept with similarly sized, calmer planktivores; when mixing anthias, hobbyists commonly add them close together in time so no single fish “owns” the water column first.
How do I get it to recognize pellets as food?
A common approach is to start with frozen foods it already targets, then add small sinking or slow-sinking pellets at the same time so they get taken in the same feeding response.
Do I need a lid or screen top?
Many anthias make fast upward dashes during feeding and chasing, so a fitted screen top is a simple way to keep them in the display long-term.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
