The Desjardinii Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is a large, high-bodied surgeonfish with tall “sail” fins and a pattern of stripes and spots that can shift in intensity as it moves through the rockwork. It’s an Indian Ocean species that’s commonly kept in large reef aquariums where it spends the day grazing and cruising open water.
What You’ll Observe:
- Wide, looping swim paths across the front of the tank, with fins flared on turns and quick bursts between rocks
- Regular grazing passes over live rock and overflows, picking at film and naturally growing algae
- Fast color and contrast changes that come and go within seconds, even when nothing else in the tank changes
- A consistent “routine” around the aquarium, often showing up quickly when you approach the glass
Provide open swimming room plus substantial rock surfaces to graze, and keep flow and oxygen levels strong for an active, constant swimmer. Offer sheets of marine algae on a clip and rotate in quality herbivore foods so it stays engaged and grazing steadily.
Will a Desjardinii Sailfin Tang get along with other tangs added later?
Many keepers have the best results by planning introductions so new arrivals can be seen (but not contacted) for a few days, which helps reduce “new fish” chasing.
Is it normal for this tang to change color or look “washed out” at times?
Yes—rapid shifts in brightness and stripe contrast are commonly observed, and the fish can look very different from hour to hour depending on mood and lighting.
Why does mine only eat from a clip when I’m standing nearby?
Some individuals learn the feeding schedule quickly and prefer to graze more actively when the tank has “activity”; consistent placement of the clip usually turns this into a reliable routine.
Can they share an algae clip with foxface/rabbitfish?
Often yes—many tanks see them settle into a “take turns” pattern at the clip once both fish recognize it as a regular food station.
Do they ever sample soft corals or LPS?
Some hobbyists report occasional “test nips,” and keeping grazing options available (rock algae + algae sheets) often redirects that attention back to the intended foods.
We source from vetted suppliers known for healthy, long-lived specimens.
