The Diamond Tail Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus attenuatus) is a small flasher wrasse recognized for fine linework along the body and a distinctly shaped “diamond” tail. Males intensify their fin color and tail shape during short display bursts, especially around other wrasses and at feeding time.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spends most of the day cruising the mid-water and weaving through open rockwork
- Makes quick “flashing” dashes with fins fully extended, then returns to normal swimming
- Comes out readily for small meaty foods and often joins the water column when the tank is fed
- Chooses a regular nook in the rockwork to settle into for the evening
Provide plenty of open swimming room with multiple rockwork passages so it can circle and display without being crowded. Offer a mix of finely chopped frozen foods and quality pellets 2–3 times per day for consistent activity. A tight-fitting lid or mesh top supports long-term success during fast display swims.
Will a single Diamond Tail Flasher Wrasse still “flash” without females?
Yes—many keepers report regular fin-extension and display behavior even as a single specimen, especially during feeding and when other active fish are present.
How do I tell a female/juvenile from a transitioning male?
Color and fin shape can change over time; as the fish transitions, you’ll often see more defined patterning and increasing fin extension compared with earlier “initial” coloration.
Is it normal for coloration to look darker or different under reef lighting?
Yes—under brighter reef lighting, keepers often notice shifts in tone and contrast, with patterns becoming more pronounced at certain angles.
Can I keep more than one flasher wrasse together?
Many hobbyists mix different wrasse types successfully, but they commonly avoid keeping multiple males of the same flasher species; adding fish with a plan and plenty of space tends to work best.
Why does my flasher wrasse sometimes lie still or “play possum” after being moved?
Some wrasses show brief “freeze” behavior during transitions; giving it a calm, predictable environment usually leads to normal swimming and feeding routines again.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
