The Dotted Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus punctatus), also sold as the Fine Spotted Fairy Wrasse, is a reef-safe wrasse with a green base color, pale underside, and small light spots that can look more defined as the fish settles in and displays. It’s an active mid-water swimmer that adds constant movement to a reef aquarium.
What You’ll Observe:
- Frequent cruising through open water, with quick dips into the rockwork between laps
- A noticeable “food response” at feeding time—coming forward quickly once it learns your routine
- Short display moments where fins extend and colors shift, especially when the fish is comfortable
- Regular use of a favorite route (and a favorite sleeping nook) that becomes predictable day to day
Provide a reef aquascape with plenty of live rock structure plus open swimming lanes, and keep a consistent feeding rhythm with a mix of meaty frozen foods and quality pellets or flakes. A secure, tight-fitting cover helps this species settle in confidently, especially during active periods.
How long does it usually take a new fairy wrasse to “show itself” regularly?
Many will spend the first few days using the rockwork more than the open water, then become more visible as they learn the tank’s rhythms and your feeding schedule.
Will a fairy wrasse sleep in the sand like some other wrasses?
Fairy wrasses typically choose a rock crevice or sheltered nook to wedge into at night, rather than burying in sand.
Do they accept pellets right away, or should I start with frozen?
A lot of keepers get the fastest response by starting with small frozen foods, then mixing in pellets once the fish is consistently coming out to eat.
Can I keep more than one fairy wrasse together without constant chasing?
Mixed-species fairy wrasse groups are common, but adding wrasses with a plan (order of introduction and enough space/rockwork) usually makes day-to-day behavior smoother.
Why does my fairy wrasse “zoom” near the surface right after feeding?
Short, high-energy swim bursts are a common post-feeding behavior; it often shows up more as the fish becomes comfortable and associates you with food.
We work with trusted suppliers who keep our specimens healthy and well-fed before shipping.
