The Ember Blenny (Cirripectes stigmaticus), also sold as the Red-streaked Blenny or Scarlet-spotted Blenny, is a rock-perching reef fish that spends its day grazing film algae and inspecting the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on scattered rocks, then making short “hop-and-dart” moves between lookout spots
- Frequent grazing passes over rock, glass, and equipment surfaces
- A consistent “favorite hole” or crevice it returns to between patrols
- Most activity concentrated near the rockwork rather than open-water swimming
Provide a well-established aquarium with plenty of scattered rock for perching and multiple crevices for backing into when it wants a secure spot. Offer a mix of meaty foods and herbivore-style frozen preparations so it can graze between meals while still getting complete nutrition. If you plan to keep more than one, introducing them at the same time helps them settle in more smoothly.
Is it normal for a new Ember Blenny to disappear into the rockwork at first?
Yes’many blennies spend their first days learning the “map” of the tank and choosing a primary perch and retreat spot, then become more visible once that routine is established.
Why does it sometimes look lighter, darker, or patterned compared to earlier?
Blennies can shift their appearance with mood, lighting, and background; you’ll often notice the biggest changes when it moves from shaded caves to bright perches.
How do I get it to eat when it mostly grazes surfaces?
Try placing foods onto the rock (or in a feeding clip/feeder ring) so it can pick at it like it does with algae film, rather than relying only on mid-water feeding.
Can I add other “rock-perching” fish later?
It usually does best when it isn’t asked to share the same prime perches; if you want multiple perch-oriented fish, planning the order of additions and offering many distinct perching zones helps.
It keeps “pecking” at powerheads and the glass’what is it doing?
That’s typical grazing and investigating behavior’many individuals patrol hard surfaces for edible film and tiny growth.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
