The Emerald Coral Clown Goby (Paragobiodon xanthosoma) is a tiny coral goby that likes to perch on rockwork and branching structures, giving your reef a “coral perch” fish that’s active without being a constant swimmer. Its small adult size makes it a natural fit for nano reef setups where you want fish behavior without a lot of open-water pacing.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite perch and watching the tank from that spot, then making short hops to a nearby ledge
- Spending time nestled into branching decor or coral-like structure, especially when lights first come on
- Taking small meaty foods from the water column and darting back to its perch between bites
- Showing “pair-like” behavior when kept with a compatible mate, including staying close together
Provide stable rockwork with multiple perching spots and a few sheltered areas so it can settle into a routine quickly. Offer small, meaty foods in small portions (like mysis, finely chopped seafood, or similar frozen blends) so it can eat comfortably in a community tank. In SPS-heavy systems, many hobbyists prefer keeping it away from delicate Acropora colonies where perching can irritate polyps.
Does this goby need a “host” coral to do well?
No—many settle in fine with rockwork and branching coral-like structure, and they’ll usually choose a favorite perch on their own.
Why does it sit in one spot for long periods?
That perching behavior is normal for coral gobies; they often “post up” on a ledge and make short moves instead of cruising the whole tank.
Will it eat pellet or flake foods?
Some will, especially once they recognize the feeding routine, but most do best when offered small frozen meaty foods as the main diet.
Can I keep two together?
Pairs are often possible, but success is best when they’re introduced at the same time and have multiple perching areas to spread out.
What does spawning behavior look like in aquariums?
When a pair settles in, they may choose a tight spot in branching structure and stay close to that area for several days, with one fish acting more “guard-like” around the chosen site.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
