The Five-Lined Snapper (Lutjanus quinquelineatus) is a yellow Indo-Pacific snapper marked with five vivid blue horizontal stripes and a deep-bodied, reef-slope profile. It’s a bold, predatory fish best suited for large fish-only marine aquariums where its cruising, midwater presence is easy to observe.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular laps through open water, with quick turns and short stops near rockwork
- A strong, immediate feeding response once it recognizes your routine
- Use of a darker cave or crevice as a “home base,” especially after lights-out
- Confident interactions with other large fish, often holding its space at mealtime
To succeed, provide a roomy tank with open swim lanes and sturdy rock structures with at least one deep retreat space. Offer a varied menu of meaty marine foods (shrimp, clam, squid, and quality frozen blends) and keep feeding consistent so it settles into a predictable routine. Pair it with similarly sized, robust tankmates that match its pace at feeding time.
Will it try to “school” like it does in the ocean?
In home aquariums it’s most often kept as a single showcase fish; groups generally work best only in very large systems where multiple individuals can be added together.
Is it normal for a snapper to stay in caves at first?
Yes—many keepers report an early “hide and observe” phase, followed by more open-water swimming once it learns the tank’s feeding pattern.
Can it be trained onto pellets?
Often yes; hobbyists commonly start with frozen/meaty foods and then mix in pellets gradually so it associates pellets with the feeding response.
Do the colors stay intense long-term?
Some keepers note that stripe contrast can look softer as the fish grows, while strong nutrition and a stable environment help maintain clean yellow-and-blue patterning.
How do you manage the fast feeding style in a community tank?
Using a feeding stick or spreading food across multiple areas helps keep the fish engaged while other large tankmates get equal access.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
