The Flametail Blenny (Enchelyurus flavipes) is an algae-grazing combtooth blenny with a dark body and a bright yellow tail. It spends much of the day perched on live rock and makes short darts between crevices while picking at film algae.
What You’ll Observe:
- Perching on a favorite ledge, then hopping to nearby rocks in quick bursts
- “Kissing”/pecking motions on rock and glass as it grazes
- A routine of retreating to the same crevice, then reappearing reliably at feeding time
- Occasional “lounging” behavior—resting on rockwork (and sometimes a soft coral like a leather)
Provide mature rockwork with multiple small caves and ledges so it can perch and retreat between grazing passes. Offer a mixed menu of algae-based foods plus small meaty items like mysis or finely chopped seafood, and keep feeding consistent so it stays visible and engaged. A snug lid helps with occasional jumping, and it typically does best when it isn’t competing with other similar-shaped blennies for the same perches.
Why did my Flametail Blenny “vanish” right after I added it?
Many keepers report it picks one crevice and keeps a low profile at first; it often becomes easier to spot once it associates you with feeding time.
Is it normal for a Flametail Blenny to lay on a leather coral or LPS?
Yes—perching and resting is normal blenny behavior, and some will treat a coral like a “couch” for short periods.
How do I tell a Flametail (Enchelyurus flavipes) from similar “bicolor” type blennies in a store?
They’re commonly mixed up in hobby conversations, so the most reliable method is confirming the scientific name on the invoice or label. Hobbyists also describe E. flavipes as having a different head profile than typical bicolor blennies.
Will it eat every nuisance algae (like the long, wiry stuff)?
Often it focuses on film algae and short growth it can scrape while perching; tougher or longer algae may not get much attention.
Do they usually settle in with damsels and other active fish?
Some hobbyists see early “sorting out” around rockwork, but with enough crevices the blenny can hold a spot and the tank tends to calm down over time.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
